John Dean made his way to the position of White House Counsel in Nixon’s first term through his friendship with John Mitchell, one of the more odious men to ever hold a cabinet position - who once remarked of the Washington Post’s publisher about the paper’s reporting on the Watergate Scandal: “Katie Graham's gonna get her tit caught in a big fat wringer if that's published.”
Before Dean realized he had a big fat target on his back, placed there by Nixon and his two henchmen H.R. Haldeman and John Ehrlichman, and found religion, he had made himself very useful to the Watergate operation, destroying evidence from Chief Watergate burglar E. Howard Hunt’s safe after the thieves were caught in the Watergate complex and later making hush money payments to the same and his crew.
So I guess you could say he knows a thing or two about criminals in the White House.
